A little about Fort Mcmurray...

Fort McMurray, colloquially referred to as Fort Mac, is a hamlet in the northeastern part of Canada's western province of Alberta, in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Although it is commonly referred to and thought of as being a city, Fort McMurray is no longer incorporated. Thus, Fort McMurray has the status of being the largest unincorporated "city" in Alberta.

Keyano College is a publicly funded college and vocational institute based in the area, known for both its Musical Instrument Repair diploma as well as for its role in training workers for the Oil Sands.

Fort McMurray is located 370 m above sea level. It is 435 km northeast of Edmonton on Highway 63, about 60 km west of the Saskatchewan border, nestled in the boreal forest at the confluence of the Athabasca River and the Clearwater River. Fort McMurray is the largest community in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

The 2006 population of Wood Buffalo is 79,810, with the majority located in or near Fort McMurray. In 1995, Fort McMurray incorporated into Wood Buffalo, giving up its city status and its own municipal government. As a result, even though its population is 64,441, it is technically a hamlet. Fort McMurray is a multicultural community, attracting people from all corners of Canada and the world. Albertans make up almost half the number of migrants to Fort McMurray, followed by 17% of people originating from the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Fly fishing at the lodges along Lake Athabasca, canœing the Clearwater River, off-roading through the sand dunes along the northern lakes, admiring the blazing Aurora Borealis or camping for the weekend at Gregoire Provincial Park, are just a few of the activities the region has to offer.

There is something for everyone to see or do in Wood Buffalo. We have a number of annual events including Interplay and the Blueberry Festival. Parades, tournaments, theatre shows, kids programs and learning opportunities. Barely a summer weekend gœs by without an event or a festival.
